Coast Along 2007 PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 15 September 2007
Humphrey and his intrepid team of walkers had a fantastic (and exhausting) day on Saturday 15th September walking the South West Coast Path as part of the WaterAid Coast Along challenge.
The challenge was to have a team on every one of the 70 sections of the coast path at the same time to cover its 630mile length in one day.
Humphrey walked the 18km between Westward Ho! and Clovelly on the North Devon Coast in 8 hours under blazing sunshine and blue skies - beautiful but HOT!!

An early breakfast and we were ready to hit the trail. Everyone was washed and ready to go so we hopped in the cars and made our way down to the beach at Westward Ho ! where we took our first steps of the 11.2 mile walk along the Devon coast to Clovelly.

It wasn’t long before we met lots of people who were out enjoying the views so my friends explained what we were doing.

On the way we walked past a herd of cows who came over to ask me what I was doing. I explained and invited them to walk with us but they said it sounded a bit too difficult for them – moo !

About half way into the walk we met another team (from Mouchelle Parkman) who were doing the Coast Along Challenge but they were walking from Clovelly to Westward Ho ! (the easy way). We chatted and discussed what we’d done so far and what each team had to look forward to ! Spurred on by the knowledge that we still had the difficult bits to do my team headed off, eager to get there as soon as we could.

The walk seemed to take longer than we predicted as we thought we would be in Clovelly by 4pm. So we decided that the 11.2 miles must have been in a straight line ! and the coast path was certainly not following a straight line !

But after a long day and lots of uphills and what seemed to be too few downhills we finally got to Clovelly at about 6 o’clock. After calling into Coast Along HQ to say that we’d finished we all went to the nearest pub to have a well earned bowl of water…. well, what did you expect Humphrey to drink…… ?

Big Camel hugs to everyone who wished us luck and donated to WaterAid along the way – it was most appreciated !
